Welcome to the July edition of my newsletter. Since the last edition I had a great extended family get-together in the Dominican Republic (DR). For anyone thinking about traveling to the DR I have a few free tips that you might put in your pocket and reference later. First, July is probably not the best time to vacation in the tropics. Second, do not under any circumstances, including circumstances that are life-threatening, rent a car if you will be driving in Santo Domingo. Just don’t.

Methylene Blue: Beneficial or Dangerous

A few patients have recently forwarded me articles that describe some alleged grave dangers of taking methylene blue. This is a medication I have prescribed hundreds of times, and before prescribing any medication I spend some time researching both its risks and its benefits. When I looked into methylene blue some years ago I was surprised to find such a wide range of potential benefits and very little in the way of documented adverse effects. Probably the most prominent writer cautioning against methylene blue recently has been Sayer Ji, founder of greenmedinfo.com. I have published essays on that platform before and I have always considered Sayer to be a reputable guy. In his article on methylene blue, the first caution is about it causing a potentially life-threatening condition called serotonin syndrome. He cites a study published in 2010. However, the study he referenced actually doesn’t exist, which makes me wonder if he used AI to generate his references and was given a fake citation that he didn’t verify. There are case reports of methylene blue inducing serotonin syndrome. Every one of these involved the use of intravenous methylene blue given at a dose approximately 7 to 15 times higher than…

Home Therapies: Plugging into the earth

One of the most fundamental barometers of cellular health is called the “membrane potential.” Both the outer cell membrane and the mitochondrial membrane should have an electrical charge differential across them. At the most basic level, a charge differential simply means there are more electrons (or protons) on one side of the membrane than on the other. Many chronic diseases such as Parkinson’s disease and cancer have a well-documented loss of the membrane potential. Loss of this potential has a number of detrimental impacts on cellular function, not the least of which is that the mitochondria lose their ability to efficiently produce ATP (i.e. the energy currency of the cell) and to quench free radicals that are created continuously. The earth has an inherent negative charge relative to the atmosphere. Living organisms continuously regulate their cellular electrical charge by exchanging electrons through direct contact with the earth. Shoes with rubber soles first came into use in the early 1800s and were the standard for manufactured shoes by the end of that century. The Menace of Mold

There are several conditions that now seem quite prevalent that were not on my clinical radar at all for the first decade-or-so of my practice. These include a connective tissue disease called Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS), SIBO, severe autonomic nervous system dysregulation, and perhaps most prominently, mold-related illness. I honestly don’t know if I just wasn’t paying attention, or if the prevalence of these (and other) conditions has actually increased over the past decade. I suspect the latter, but I don’t know. Mold is virtually ubiquitous in the natural world, but that’s not the stuff that causes health problems. It is the mold growing in basements, bathrooms, behind walls, and in other confined areas without adequate ventilation that causes some devastating health issues for many people. Beyond the environment, foods are also a source of mold. Grains including corn, nuts, fruit, and others, both conventionally and organically grown, can harbor mold. Many types of mold produce chemicals called mycotoxins which, as you might have guessed, are toxins. There are over a dozen different mycotoxins produced by molds that grow in water-damaged buildings or other humid environments. What Your Gut Has to Do With Sleep and Feeling Good

As most of you know I am constantly involved in research. I have the good fortune to be collaborating with Dr. Stephanie Seneff of MIT. She is one of the most brilliant and innovative thinkers with regard to health and disease that I know. We have recently finished up and submitted for peer review not one, but two papers (and we’re currently working on another). One of those papers got rejected prior to peer review, almost certainly because Stephanie has published lots of papers critical of both glyphosate and the mRNA shots. Because of that crime many journal editors punish her by not even considering her submissions. We are still searching for a journal that might accept it, but I wanted to go ahead and share it with you. The paper is titled Regulation of Melatonin Metabolism by Gut Microbes and the Role of Deuterium, co-authored by Stephanie, me, and Dr. Anthony Kyriakopoulos. Treating Symptoms Won’t Fix Your Health

One of the most lucrative and destructive lies ever sold to the public is that the symptoms we experience are the disease that needs to be treated by our medical system. Once symptoms were made synonymous with the problem to fix, the medical industry achieved a triple win. The first win is with the sale of pharmaceuticals, predominantly petroleum-based chemicals that will generate up to $635 billion in 2025 for the industry that produces them. Second, and with a completely straight face, that industry gets to refer to those products as “health care,” because it sold the idea that to get rid of symptoms is to promote health. And third, when those pharmaceuticals create the virtually inevitable symptoms (“side effects”) of their own, one or more additional pharmaceuticals will often be prescribed. Those who have to interact with the “health care” system in the US almost universally describe it as a miserable experience. This in spite of the fact that per capita spending on health care in the US in 2025 is estimated to be around $16,000, the highest by far in the developed world. Don’t Fall for the Fear

Just Ain’t Right

I am fascinated by theories within science that just don’t make sense. I’m talking about “scientific” and widely accepted explanations for things that, when you really look deeply into them, just don’t add up. A deep read into these theories commonly reveals competing ideas that seem to explain observations much better. In my world this includes everything from neo-Darwinian evolutionary therapy, Big Bang cosmology, and cell physiology, to the standard model of atomic physics, origin-of-life science, climatology, genetics and evolutionary biology, and more. Each of these topics I’ve explored in depth and emerged from that with a very different understanding of the topic than I had when I started.

I’m curious to know what topics you have read into, causing you to question everything/most/some of what you had previously thought to be true about it. It might be about anything from cosmology to house plants to computers to the best way to jump-start a car. It doesn’t matter. I’m just curious to learn about ideas that caused someone else to thump their forehead. And of course I’ll share what I learn from you in coming newsletters. The thrill of learning something new and discovering new ideas, for me at least, instills a sense of delight that can last for years. And that, I would say, is pretty cheap therapy.
